Danes Worldwide Corner

Danes Worldwide represented at “Folkemødet” 14-17 June 2018
Every year, the island of Bornholm in Denmark is the site of a large gathering of politicians, government officials, industry and union leaders, and many other stakeholders in the administration of the communities and institutions of Denmark.
For four days at the eighth annual social summit, “Folkemødet”, 113,000 attendees – a record number – discussed politics and public policy and enjoyed the company of each other. Danes Worldwide Secretary General Anne Marie Dalgaard was there and had conversations with a number of key politicians, among them Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Minister of Immigration Inger Støjberg, and recently appointed Minister of Education and Research Tommy Ahlers. At meetings of that kind, the most important is to network and meet the politicians – especially the ministers – for short conversations. The topics off course was Danes Worldwide’s key issues such as the Danish unification rules. In addition, the Secretary General had the opportunity to speak with several industry representatives and to raise awareness of Danes Worldwide.

Danes Worldwide Corner

Deferral of proposed taxation legislation affecting expat Danes
Danes Worldwide recently provided formal input to legislative hearings related to proposed new taxation regulations. One key point of objection was the proposed reduction from 180 to 90 days per year in the amount of time expat Danes are allowed to spend in Denmark without incurring tax liability. The Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai has expressed a similar concern.
We are pleased to report that the objection has been noted. Minister of Taxation Karsten Lauritzen (the Venstre party) has deferred the proposed legislation until the next session of Parliament. He explained the deferral to the newspaper Børsen:”It was our intent to introduce the new legislation prior to the end of the current legislative session, but in light of the input received during hearings and of the objections raised we realize that we must adjust the details, and that is not possible within the time remaining.”
The full text (in Danish) of the Danes Worldwide submission to the hearings is available here.

Chairman’s Corner – Poul G. Kristensen

Dear Members and Friends of DCCC,

Once again winter is over and we are already enjoying the nice temperatures of the early summer time. That is one of the amazing things of Shanghai area where we mostly only have winter and summer.

Regarding DCCC, we started the summer very good with one of our big events, the Easter Lunch that again was enjoyed by many of our members. We continued with other events of both professional and social character.

Among others, as a part of our co-operation with other institutions / associations we held the 17th of April together with the Royal Danish Consulate in Shanghai and Danes Worldwide a very big event with more than 60 people.  During the presentation, Anne Marie Dalsgaard, the Secretary of Danes Worldwide shared with the participants what DW does and how they can help Danes living abroad.

There were many questions and concerns from the participants about: Repatriation issues, how to keep the Danish citizenship for children born outside Denmark, Retirement rules Etc. This shows us that many of our members that are also members of DW want to follow closer what happens in Denmark regarding regulations and rule some will influence Danes living abroad. Therefore we have added in our home page a link to Danes Worldwide, where you can find their contact person in China and also open their home page.

Furthermore we are discussing other ways of making this cooperation stronger and more useful for our members. We will keep you informed about it.

Actually our Board is working with many different projects to reach out to more people and suit our events to the needs of our members. Therefore we will appreciate that if you have any ideas or suggestions regarding events that you want to attend, please don’t hesitate to contact us and share your thoughts.

Even we are just at the beginning of May, we are already preparing and organizing everything for the BPOY, that will be held the 3th of November and in this connection we are looking for sponsors for it and will be very happy to hear from you also.

Newsletter March/April 2018

Chairman’s Corner – Poul G. Kristensen
Dear Members and Friends of DCCC,

As already announced the 15th March 2018 we held our Annual General Meeting in Shanghai. For the AGM this year we had 41 participants (17 individual and 24 corporate) plus 13 Proxy given to some of the participants. That means 37 (the highest number ever) corporate members were represented at the election of the new Board and voting for the By-laws.

The suggested amendments to our Bylaws were approved by 2/3 of the corporate members represented at the AGM. And all the 14 nominees were elected to the Board. The new Board consist of 6 “old members” that also were there last year and 8 new members. Furthermore the YP (Young Professionals) Chairman is now a voting member of the DCCC board and we still have the honor of counting Nicolai Prytz (the Danish Consul in Shanghai) as our honorary member.

This Board is the largest ever and probably the most diversified we had had. Our Board members are more or less representing all the different Danish industries / interests and groups, therefore we are looking forward to see them all in action to the benefit of our members. Below you can see the list with all the members of the new Board.

At the Annual General Meeting held on 15th March 2018, the board managing the daily affairs of the Chamber were elected as follows:

Vice Chairman:                     Christy Chen Møller

Treasurer:                              Niels Roed

Secretary:                              Echo Zhao

Member:                                 Ida Speyer

Member:                                 Janus Castro Grimnitz

Member:                                 Simon Lichtenberg

Honorary Member:   Nicolai Prytz

I will use this opportunity to thanks all the former, the remaining and the new members of our Board, because with their participation, work and support they make possible for DCCC to keep existing for our members and developing to new highs.

Newsletter February 2018

Chairman’s Corner – Poul G. Kristensen
Dear Members and Friends of DCCC,

Happy New Year 2018 and farewell to the year of the Rooster!

Since our last newsletter many things have happened and we want to share them with you.

As many of you probably noticed, once again we hold breaking record and successful Danish Christmas dinner & Party at Henkes Saturday on the 9th of December. We had traditional Danish X-mas dishes with free flow of beer and snaps (actually many participants were surprised about the big amount of snaps – imaging that). We also had lucky draw prizes and nothing of that will be possible without the support of our sponsors, so once again big thanks to our sponsors for the snaps and lucky draw prizes etc.

As already announced and to keep our new tradition to help developing leaders, this January we start a new program of Emerging Leaders Training. Furthermore, we had many other events, both own as well shared with other chambers of commerce as: China after the Congress- new reforms or economic downturn; New Anti-Unfair Competition law and Belt and Road – Business Across Asia and Beyond event.

The 30th of January we held the first official meeting with all the 3 DCCC chapters chairmen and administrative teams representing North China, South China and Central China.

It was very nice to start for real, our cooperation and discover the big potential we have now, to offer better activities / events for our members across China.

At the same time we agreed on the ground rules for communication with other associations / authorities to stay stronger, more professional and better defending our members interests. We all agreed that it is the right time to increase this cooperation and benefit from each other’s experiences, contacts, know how etc. So we are looking forward for a great year for all the DCCC members in China.

The Chinese New Year is almost already here so we will have a slow February month regarding activities from DCCC, but we are quite sure that you will find other options as well time to be with your beloved ones.

After the Chinese New Year, more exactly the 15th March 2018 we will hold our Annual General Meeting and we hope that many of you will join it. This year is very special for different reasons, firstly because we are going to introduce different modifications to our Bylaws and that need to be approved by the voting members (corporate members), secondly we have many new candidates to become members of the board and it will be a good opportunity to meet them and finally the AGM is your opportunity to share your opinion / whishes with the board. Please remember that if you have anything that you want to be discussed at the AGM, we need to get this information / input before the 13th of February because of the Chinese New Year. Even we have already many candidates to the board, if you want or know someone that you will recommend as a candidate, keep in mind that we also need this information very soon and before the 13th of February 2018.

On the 24th of March we are going to celebrate Easters, so reserve the date and remember the other important ones:

Welcome back BB 07/09/2018

BPOY 03/11/2018

X-mas Party 08/12/2018

We welcome our new corporate member: Radisson Blu Hotel Shanghai New World

Sincerely yours,

Poul G.  Kristensen

Newsletter December 2017

Chairman’s Corner – Poul G. Kristensen

Dear Members and Friends of DCCC,

November was a very important month for DCCC as it was in this month that we organized the biggest Danish business event in China, the Business Person of the Year Gala Ball.

The Business Person of the Year Gala Ball was held at the Wanda Reign on the Bund with an amazing ballroom and the view of the Huangpu River. We had many guests from young professionals, entrepreneurs, MNCs, to dignitaries such as the Danish Ambassador to China Anders Carsten Damsgaard and Nicolai Prytz, the Consul General at the Danish Consulate.

The BPOY was a huge success but we know there is always room for improvement. We will make it our mission to give the Danish community an even better BPOY in 2018.

On the 22nd of November we concluded the Team Management training. The program was joined by the Swedish Chamber of Commerce and the Finnish Business Council Shanghai (FBCS). I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the 26 graduates and thank them and the trainers as well for supporting this program.

As the yuletide season is soon here, we are having our annual Danish Christmas Party at Henkes on the 9th of December. We will be having a buffet of traditional Danish Christmas food, all you can drink snaps and beer (till supply lasts). And of course, the party would not be a party without our usual lucky draw and dancing.

I would like to remind everybody about the upcoming Emerging Leader training program which will begin in January 2018. Please register your colleagues soon as we have limited seats for this program.

Speaking about 2018 activities, please reserve the following dates of the 3 most important events of DCCC:

Welcome Back BBQ:             Sept 7, 2018
BPOY 2018:                          Nov 3, 2018
Danish Christmas Party         Dec 8, 2018

Looking forward to a better and brighter year for DCCC and our members in 2018

Glædelig jul!

Sincerely Yours,
Poul G. Kristensen

Chairman’s Corner – Poul G. Kristensen

Dear Members and Friends of DCCC,

We are on the last quarter of the year and despite this, DCCC has been very busy with many events in October. We have had the 2nd course of the Team Management Training program which was the Effective Communication for Teams & Managers. We also had our informative corporate events like the Cyber Crime in China & Future of VPNs and Convert Social Events to Business Impact. We had 2 joint chamber events which were The 10 Costly Mistakes during Hiring Process and How to do it the Right Way, and Business Insights with Mats Harborn. Last but not the least, we had our usual Danish Friday held at Union Trading.

In the beginning of  November, we had the most awaited and the biggest event of DCCC, the Business Person of the Year 2017 Gala Ball which was held at the Wanda Reign on the Bund on the 4th   of November. It was amazing to see that we did not only have Danish guests but also Canadian, European and other Asians as well. The event was graced with the presence of  Anders Carsten Damsgaard the Ambassador of Denmark to China and Consul General Nicolai Prytz. Danish celebrity Jim Lyngvild was the master of ceremony who did a very good job in giving the limelight to the winners.

The winners this year were:

Business Person of the Year 2017           John Markmann

Entrepreneur of the Year 2017                  Mikkel Hippe Brun

Young Professional of the Year 2017      Kasper Elmholdt Pedersen

I would personally like to thank all our sponsors as without them, this event would have not been possible. I look forward to having them support BPOY 2018 again.

Looking forward to see you all at our annual Danish Christmas Lunch on the 9th of December at Henkes!

Sincerely Yours,

Poul G. Kristensen

Newsletter October 2017

Chairman’s Corner – Poul G. Kristensen

Dear Members and Friends of DCCC,

After a long summer break, we are back strong with so much events and historical good news for the months of August & September.

Our first event after the summer holiday was on the 18th  of August which was the Danish Friday at Maya. On the 1st of September , we had 1 of the 3 biggest events of DCCC every year which was the Welcome Back BBQ at Lil Laundry. We had a breaking record of attendance this year and we hope to continue this great turn out.

We had a mix crowd of old & new DCCC members and their friends plus newly arrived Danes starting their lives in Shanghai. We enjoyed a night of a delicious buffet of  BBQ meats and sides, overflowing supply of drinks, both alcholic & non-alcoholic, exciting lucky draw prizes and most importantly great company!

In September we had the following events: “Getting things done – The art of stress-free productivity”, September Danish Friday, “My 5 biggest mistakes and what I wish I knew then” with Steen Teisen & Allan Sand, “Impress with Chinese table manners” and lastly “Environmental Protection: How companies stay ahead of regulatory and Policy trends”.

And now for the historical news I mentioned earlier. I can proudly tell you all that starting September, all 3 chapters: Beijing, Shanghai and South China will be working as one  DCCC. This means that all will be acting together in connection with Danish/Chinese institutions, government and associations but will continue to operate independently and will abide by their own bylaws. The Chairmen of the 3 chapters will be electing one of them to be the Pan China Chairman for DCCC and represent us all. The 3 chairmen and each of their administration teams will have regular communication to coordinate the activities of DCCC. I would like  to thank the Board members of the 3 chapters and in particular the 2 other Chairmen: Jan Laegaard Broni and Jens Eskelund for their trust and support! I will do my best to enhance this opportunity together with all the board committees and members.

Looking forward to see you at our next events and wishing you all a great October holiday!
Sincerely Yours,

Poul G. Kristensen

Newsletter June 2017

Chairman’s Corner – Poul G. Kristensen
Dear Members and Friends of DCCC,

May has been a very interesting month with many activities and events.

As you probably all know, the Danish Premier Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen recently visited China. Apart from visiting Chengdu to see the 2 giant pandas to be sent to the Copenhagen Zoo to live there for some time, he also went to sign cooperation documents on food & drug supervision, quarantine & panda protection amongst others

The Danish Embassy in Beijing hosted a lunch for Prime Minister Rasmussen. On this occasion, DCCC Shanghai & DCCC Beijing took this opportunity to present a letter regarding the challenge many of our members face having non-Danish wives how they are unable to secure a residence permit in Denmark when their spouses want to return home.

The response from Prime Minister Rasmussen to the letter we wrote will be included in this newsletter.

We would like to assure you that we will tirelessly follow up on this issue. We will also be cooperating with associations like Danes Worldwide etc who are experts on this matter.

On another note, we have had many events this past month. The Shanghai Andersen Paradise Park event held on the 20th of May had a breaking number of attendees which was 140 people. It was a great place to spend that beautiful Saturday with the family!
I would like to welcome Shanghai Anderson to the DCCC family as they have recently signed up to be a corporate member!

On the 25th of May, we had a cooking event at Jean Georges which Chef Paul Eschbach hosted. It was an incredible opportunity to learn how to cook and make delicious food for your loved ones or for your family. This event was sold out after a few days and participants were clamoring for more of these kinds of events.

June will be a very busy month for DCCC with numerous events that would suit every members’ interest. Please keep an eye on the invitations our secretariat sends out and maybe something will catch your attention.

Looking forward to see you at our next events!

Sincerely Yours,
Poul G. Kristensen
