Chairman’s Corner – Emil Hauch Jensen

Dear Members and Friends of the Chamber!

At the AGM held last week, I was honored to be elected Chairman of DCCC Shanghai for a second term. I would like to thank all of you for your trust in me and I promise to do my very best to make 2016 another fantastic year for DCCC.

More importantly, our board got some fresh new power from the election of Christy Chen Moeller, Gitte Soee Pedersen and Kjeld Staerk. We are very excited to have these talented people join our board!

Unfortunately, we also had to say goodbye to a few members who for various reasons decided to leave our board and in two cases even leave our great city. That was Christian Overgaard, Francis Hoang and Peter Kiaer. I would like to sincerely thank all three for their great contributions to DCCC. Big positive marks have been left behind by all three and we really appreciate it!

Not sure what an AGM is and what the board does in DCCC? Fear not, here is the simple explanation.

As a member of DCCC, you are actually an “Owner” of our organization with the right to nominate and vote for someone to represent you at the Board of Directors. This is done once a year in March at the Annual General Meeting (or AGM for short).

The board meets once a month with their primary responsibility being to plan new events and use their network to reach out to great speakers. The board members volunteer their time and none of them (including yours truly) are paid to be on the board.

The board are also responsible to oversee the work of our Secretariat consisting of our Executive Director Anneli Vilu and our Event Manager Laura Li. The secretariat is working full time day and sometimes night to make sure that DCCC has the best events and taking care of all the practical details of running the chamber and for that they do get paid a modest sum.

All so that you our Members can enjoy great events and access to knowledge sharing and networking opportunities. When you join an event you become our “Customer”.

So as a member of DCCC you are both the Owner and the Customer – that is why we say “DCCC is for the Members by the Members”.

In 2015, DCCC held 65 events with a total of 1984 participants. This is really quite a lot if you start to think about it. In fact, it is a lot more than what many of our colleagues in other Chambers of Commerce in Shanghai are doing and it is really only possible due to the great volunteer effort put in by our board, by our sponsors, and by other members who now and then step in to lend a hand. Seeing this amazing unification around a shared purpose is really inspiring and it is the reason why I am so proud to be your chairman!

Being for the Members by the Members also mean we will continue to measure ourselves not by the profit we generate but by the value we provide to our members. By that yards stick 2015 was a good year for DCCC, we believe we can do even better in 2016.

Sincerely,

Emil Hauch Jensen
Chairman of the Board, DCCC Shanghai Chapter
